Monday 8 February until Friday 12 February: Timothy Sheehan, PhD, Hazelden Foundation

One of America’s leading addiction specialists, Dr Tim Sheehan, is currently visiting Cape Town exclusively as a VIP guest of Harmony Addictions Clinic & Holistic Retreat. This is his first visit to South Africa.

Dr Sheehan is from the iconic treatment centre, Hazelden, in Minnesota, regarded globally by health professionals as the world leader in addiction treatment.

Most alcohol and drug rehabilitation centres throughout the world use Hazelden’s Minnesota Model as part of their treatment programme.

Dr Sheehan has over 25 years of clinical experience in addiction and mental health services, tertiary education and professional training. Some of his contributions include developing co-occurring disorder treatments.

A co-occurring disorder is when you have both a substance abuse problem and a mental health issue such as depression, bipolar disorder, or anxiety.

He has published numerous journals and self-help articles, lectured internationally and appeared at the first addiction symposium in the United Kingdom (including a conference with a committee of the House of Lords and House of Commons).

Some of his workbooks (such as Shame + Depression) are used worldwide in treatment centres and by addiction specialists.
